AKSW at TU Dresden PLT
On June 8, I (Jens) visited the process control engineering research group (PLT) of Leon Urbas at the Dresden University of Technology. We first met on the Leipziger Semantic Web Day where Leon Urbas presented interactive Linked Data applications and decided to have a longer meeting later on. I first gave a talk on the [...]

LinkedGeoData Release 2
The AKSW research group is happy to announce a new release of LinkedGeoData! The aim of the LinkedGeoData (LGD) project is to make the OpenStreetMap (OSM) datasets easily available as RDF. As such the main target audience is the Semantic Web community, however it may turn out to be useful to a much larger audience. [...]

May 4-5: Leipziger Semantic Web Tag 2011 and Local Media Conferenz
Like in the past two years, we again organize a Leipzig Semantic Web Day on May 5th at the marvelous Mediencampus Villa Ida. This year’s theme is “Linked Data  for the Masses”, particularly focusing on its use in enterprises. This event will not only give you the opportunity to discuss current developments around semantic web [...]

Semantic Web Journal launched
A short while ago the Semantic Web Journal was launched. Pascal Hitzler and Krzysztof Janowicz are editors-in-chief and AKSW’s Sören Auer serves on the editorial board. The journal published by IOS Press differs from other journals, in particular, since it follows an open and transparent peer-review process, which engages a wider community besides expert reviews. [...]

Dedicated Virtual LinkedGeoData Server
Due to the rising interest in our LinkedGeoData project and the growth of the underlying OpenStreetMap database, we expanded the AKSW server infrastructure. LinkedGeoData will gradually move to a new server running Debian within the next weeks. This server runs on a virtual machine inside a new cluster at the University of Leipzig. Resources (memory, [...]

LinkedGeoData

Background

Spatial data is crucial for the Semantic Data Web in order to interlink geographically linked resources.
The OpenStreetMap project collects, organizes and publishes geo data the wiki way. Currently the 80.000 Open Street Map users collected data about 22.000.000km ways (roads, highways etc.) on earth. 25.000km are added daily. The Open Street Map database also contains a vast amount of structured information about points-of-interest such as for example shops, amenities, sports venues, businesses, touristic and historic sights.

Aim

The goal of this project is to publish OSM geo data, interlink it with other data sources and provide efficient means for browsing and authoring. We aim at working as closely as possible with both the OSM and LOD communities.

Components

The project currently consists of three components:

  • Open Street Map data extraction currently works on the basis of OSM database dumps. A live-sync module keeps the data in our SPARQL endpoints up-to-date.
  • LinkedGeo Data browser is based on Javascript widgets, which can display the data from the Linked Geo Data SPARQL endpoints. Support for endpoints of other projects in the works.
  • A Server providing a Linked Data Interface and a REST API, that grant access to RDFized data based on a (relational) OSM database.

The data can be accessed via Downloads, SPARQL Endpoints, and the REST API.
